Man of Distinction: Ali Mazrui
Charles Mgheny in the Star: ...Kassim said Mazrui will be buried at a family graveyard opposite Fort Jesus, where his great grandfathers, grandfather and his father, Sheikh Al-Amin bin Ali Mazrui (1891-1947) were buried.

The graveyard has been gazetted by the National Museum of Kenya as a monument.

A plaque outside the gate to the cemetery reads, “The graveyard belongs to the Mazrui family who ruled Mombasa in the 18th century after the defeat of the Portuguese, the Omani Arabs controlled the Coast through locally based hereditary governors.”

Until his death at 81, Mazrui was the Director of the Institute of Global Cultural Studies, the Albert Schweitzer Professor in the Humanities, and Professor of Political Science, African Studies, Philosophy, Interpretation and Culture at State University of New York at Binghamton. He was also Albert Luthuli Professor-at-large at the University of Jos, Nigeria and Andrew D. White Professor-at-large and Senior Scholar in African studies at Cornell University.
