Chief minister of Indian-controlled Kashmir The chief minister of Indian-controlled Kashmir Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was well-known politician of India. India and Pakistan have long battled over control of Kashmir, the Himalayan region that has been divided between them since 1947. The Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party founded in 1999 by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed gained popularity in the restive region on a promise to bring a 'healing touch' and he was praised for his efforts to bring about reconciliation. The party's main support is among Muslims in the Kashmir valley, the hub of a separatist insurgency that broke out in 1989. The party stops short of calling for independence for the region. Mufti Mohammad Sayeed died of pneumonia in New Delhi.
