Islam in the City

Time Out’s latest cover story is all about Muslims in London –  go out and buy! Cricklewood blogger gives a rave review….Featured are Syed Kamall, the London MEP and two other men and three women. The magazine states, ‘rather than buy-in to a racist representation of all Muslims as terrorists, we should recognise both what Islam has given this city already, and the advantages it would bring across a wide range of areas in the future’.

It then lists various themes with a short descriptive para on each – public health, ecology, education, food, interfaith relations, arts, social justice and race relations. Much to gladden the heart of London’s 1 million strong Muslim population.

And the Cricklewood connections? One of the gents featured is rapper Abdul-Karim Tablib, who frequently attends the dhikr sessions at the Chichele Road mosque. Another, Yahya Birt has also attended dhikr sessions in the locale – Birt’s frequent citations in Muslim roll-calls bring to mind the question raised in the high-brow magazine Prospect – Britain’s most important Muslim?  One of the ladies featured, Nazenin Ansari, is from the posher adjoining Maida Vale. Akhtar, the sporty one also featured, has been spotted many at a time at Brent Cross doing holiday jobs at River Island.

And how does Cricklewood Blogger know all this?
