Laurent Guiraud writing in the Tribune de Geneve, “Ian Hamel, le correspondant en Suisse du magazine français «Le Point», est condamné en appel pour diffamation à l’endroit de Tariq Ramadan. Il écope de 90 jours-amende avec sursis.”
Ian Hamel, the Swiss correspondent for the French magazine “Le Point”, was convicted on 30 November 2023 by the Chambre pénale d’appel et de révision (CPAR) for defamation against Tariq Ramadan. He received a 90-day suspended fine. He had falsely claimed that Professor Tariq Ramadan was guilty of sexual improprieties with students.
The article was written in November 2018. A retraction 5 years later, after the reputation of a distinguished Muslim intellectual was destroyed!
The judges added, “la faute de Ian Hamel n’est pas négligeable. Il s’en est pris à l’honneur de Tariq Ramadan, en lui prêtant un comportement pénalement répréhensible. Il a fait mine d’asseoir son propos sur un rapport officiel, commandé par l’État, tout en en tronquant le contenu. Ce faisant, il a trompé le lecteur, ce qui relève, au-delà de l’aspect pénal, de la faute professionnelle.” [Ian Hamel’s fault is not negligible. He attacked the honor of Tariq Ramadan, attributing to him criminally reprehensible behavior. He pretended to base his remarks on an official report, commissioned by the State, while truncating its content. In doing so, he deceived the reader, which, beyond the criminal aspect, constitutes professional misconduct].
