16 November 2022 Muslim Police Association – call to replace terminology that increases Islamophobia

The Muslim Association of Muslim Police, founded in 2007, as a forum for UK Police officers, Police staff, Police Specials and volunteers, has issued a statement calling on the Home Office and Police Service to change its use of terminology such as ‘Islamist’ and ‘Islamism’ to describe the extremist ideology of groups such as Daesh or Al-Qaeda. It notes, “this creates negative bias and stigma through associating Islam with extremism and singling out ‘Islam’ in a manner that is not consistent across other forms of extremism. Consequently, leaving many Muslims feeling marginalised, vulnerable and at a higher risk of hate crime and discrimination”.

NAMP suggests “Daesh-inspired Terrorism” as well as one alternative.
