Ismail Muhammad

Death:2000

Barrister and Judge. Ismail was a lifelong champion of the fight against white rule and the first person of colour to preside over South Africa's highest Common-law court. He was one of the country's leading authorities on law and one of the bar's sharpest minds and engaging orators. Ismail was regularly invited abroad to lecture and was awarded Karpf Peace Prize in the USA. Ismail was Indian by extract, and passion and compassion was his quality and anguished intellectual honesty his distinction. He died of pancreatic cancer and was buried in Pretoria.
