Ismail Ibn Sharif
The ruler of Morocco from 1672 to 1727.
After the death of his half-brother ar-Rashid who was the founder of the Alawi dynasty, Ismail proclaimed himself the ruler. After the death of his nephew in 1686, he became the absolute ruler.
Ismail had his army trained by European and it was during his reign that the French started influencing Moroccan affairs.
Ismail fought with the Ottomans in 1679, 1682 and 1695/6 and finally forced them to accept his independence.
Ismail captured al Mahamurah from the Spanish in 1681 and expelled the English from Tangiers in 1684.
