The first king of the Safavi dynasty of Iran. Safvis took their name from Shaikh Safiuddin whose son Sadruddin Musa was a holy man. It was said that Amir Taimur who had brought many prisoners from Turkistan came for blessings to this holy man, he asked him to release the prisoners. The descendants of the captives of Taimur became the supporters of the Saffvi family and helped Ismail Shah Shafvi to become the king of Iran and ruled for twenty-five years. After Ismail's defeat by Sultan Salim of Turkey in the battle of Chaldiran in 1514, he lost the nimbus of invincibility in the eyes of his followers.
