Ibn Khalikan Shamsuddin Abul Abbas Ibn Muhammad
A scholar of high calibre, a poet, a compiler and a historian.
He came from a family of Balkh and was born at Arbela but raised in Damascus. He studied in Mossul, Aleppo and Damascus where he was appointed the Chief Qazi till 1281. His celebrated biographical work 'Wafayat al-A'yan wa-anba'abna'al-zaman' the 'obituaries of eminent persons and information on the contemporaries' was the first general biographical lexicon, not confined on groups of persons (tawa'if) and not on geographical places, as was normal in former times since 9th century. De Slane translated his work in English in 1842, in four volumes.
