Ibn Al Bawwab Abul Hasan Ali Ibn Hilal

Birth:

Death:c1022

Calligrapher. Ibn Al Bawwab invented the Rayhani and Muhaqqaq script. He improved upon Ibn Muqlah, who had invented Naskhi and tawqi scripts about a century earlier. Ibn Al Bawwab came from a poor family, which was evident from his name, which meant the son of the doorkeeper. He developed interest in calligraphy under Muhammad ibn Asad who was a student of Ibn Muqlha. It was said that he had produced about sixty-four copies of the Qur'an by hand, one of which in Rayhani script can still be seen at the Laleli Mosque, Istanbul.
