Hasan Sabah

Birth:1050s

Death:1124

The founder of the Ismaili dynasty in Iran. Hasan Sabah was the mace-bearer of Sultan Alp Arsalan, but after a dispute with Nezam-ul-Mulk the minister of Arsalan, he came to Ray, his native country. From there he went to Syria into the service of Ismail bin Jafar Sadiq and became a Shia. After some time he was able to gather some followers and along with them succeeded in gaining a strong hold in the mountain fort of Alahmut, situated between Qazwin and Gilan. He took the fort in 1089 and from there he used to send his followers to kill his enemies. Hasan used to give them hashish before sending them and thus the English term `Assassin' was formed from the corruption of this term.
