Tawfiq Al Hakim
The founder of the modern Egyptian theatre.
Hakim Tawfiq studied law at Cairo University, and in Paris, and pursued dramas as his hobby. He was acknowledged for his dramatic talents, in 1933, for his drama Al Kahf. He wrote Shahrazad in 1934 followed by Malik Udib, Pijmaliyin, Sulaiman al Hakim, Sir ul Muntahirah, Rusasah fi al Qalb and Muhammad.
Prose plays, before Hakim Tawfiq used to be comedy or farce, but he adopted prose as his medium and made it a respected literacy genre.
Hakim Tawfiq Hussain authored an autobiographical novel, criticising the Egyptian officials. His novel People of the Cave in 1933 was considered a landmark in Arabic literature.
