A great poet. Firdousi's literary epic Shahnameh is a great classic in Persian poetry. Tens of thousands of verses of poetry merge together myth, legend and history, chronicling the reigns of Iranian kings - the legendary annals of the ancient kings from the first king Kaimors to the death of Yedlijard-III, the last Sassanian King who was defeated by the Arabs during the reign of Hazarat Umar in 641. Written in the 11th century by Firdousi or Ferdowsi the Shahnameh tells the story of the struggle between good and evil, between god and the devil. It lies at the heart of Persian literature, a glittering thread weaving through Iranian culture, stringing together each chapter of the nation's history. It is crowded with moral tales about incompetent or brutal rulers. Children still learn the Shahnameh at school and most Iranian can recite a chunk or two. The Shahnameh consisted of 60,000 verses for which Sultan Mahmud Ghanzni had promised to pay one gold Dinar for each couplet. And he did when he is believed to have sent the 60,000 gold pieces to Firdousi, the day Firdousi died in his hometown, Tus. He was born Abul Qasim Hasan Bin Sharaf Shah. The millennial anniversary of the birth of Firdousi or Ferdowsi was celebrated in Europe, Asia and America during 1934-35.
