Politician. Faud epitomised the landed aristocracy of the old order of Egypt that was swept away in 1952. He joined Wafd party in 1942 whose slogan was, 'Religion is for God, the homeland is for all.' He believed in national unity between Muslims and Copts. In 1952 he won national acclaim when, as minister of interior, he supported the Egyptian position in the clash between Egyptian police and a British battalion over a dispute that is still commemorated as National Police Day in Egypt. Faud opposed Nasser's policies and for that he spent time in prison. Faud Sirageddin, a determined and resourceful leader, was born near Cairo.
