The daughter of Hussain Nizam Shah of Ahmad Nagar, was married to Ali Adil Shah of Bijapur, when the two rival Muslim kingdoms had united in order to fight the king of Vijaynagar. In 1580 after her husband was murdered she became the regent of her husband's nephew and became the real power behind the throne. She appointed Ikhalas Khan, an Abyssinian, as minister to counter the threat of the Iranian nobles, but Ikhlas Khan proved disloyal. Despite her best efforts affairs in Bijapur and Ahmad Nagar continued to go from bad to worse, owing to the mutual jealousies of the nobles, till Akbar annexed it and made it a part of the Moghul empire in 1599.
