Imamu Amiri Baraka

American poet and playwright. In 1967 he taught poetry at the new school of Social Research, drama at Columbia University, and served as a visiting professor at San Francisco State College. He founded the Black Community Development and Defence organisation in 1968, was Chairman, Congress of African People, was secretary General National Black Assembly, and was recipient of Witty fellowship (1963), Guggenheim fellowship (1965) and Directorate of Human letters (1972). Baraka authored many books on criticism, drama, poetry, novel, etc. He was considered to be the most gifted black writer. He won his greatest acclaim as a playwright. His plays included the prize winning the Dutch Man, The Slave and The Toilet. His impact was so great that he was dubbed as `the High Priest of the Black Aesthetic'. In 1965 he set up the Black Arts Theatre and school in Harlem. Baraka Imamu Amiri was born in New York and graduated from Columbia University.
