One of the pioneers of Progressive Movement in Urdu literature. An all-round scholar Azmatullah Khan's writings in Urdu include 'Sureelay Bol', 'Intekhaab-e-Mazaamen-e-Azmat' and 'Hansi Ki Kirnein - Shaahkaar afsaanay aur draamay' (masterpiece short stories and dramas). Writing poetry in Urdu using Hindi measures he also wrote essays and poems in English and translated several English poems into Urdu verses. Azmatullah Khan was the Assistant Director of Education in Hyderabad, a princely state of British India, and a hub of intellectual environment.
