Azlan was educated in England, studied Law at Lincoln's in and returned to Malaya in 1955. Over the next 20 years he occupied important posts in the judicial and legal services: In 1979 the Chief Justice of the Malaysia High Court, in 1982 Lord president of Malaysia and in 1989, the nine rulers of the States of Malaysia, elected him the 9th king of Malaysia.
