Saudi diplomat The most familiar face and voice of Saudi Arabia in western capitals for four decades was Prince Saud al-Faisal as foreign minister. One of the most influential members of the Saudi government, Prince Saud al-Faisal became the world's longest serving foreign minister, navigating four Saudi kings and seven US presidents. Known as pro-western figure, Prince Saud worked to build relations with the US after they were damaged by the attacks of September 11, 2001. In the West, Prince Saud argued passionately that the Arab world should be seen as the principal victim of international terrorism, while at home, he defended his country's role in offering support to Washington's 'war on terror'. He led Saudi delegations in Middle East peace talks, and played a leading part in regional politics through the Gulf Co-operation Council. Softly spoken manner and unfailing courtesy was the hallmark of Prince Saud al-Faisal. As fluent in English as he was in Arabic Prince Saud al-Faisal was conservative, quit and logical in his interviews and press conferences. Prince Saud al-Faisal was born in the mountainous city of Taif. He was sent to Princeton University in the US where he earned a degree in economics.
