Nigerian politician Disguised in a priest's cassock Alhaji Umaru Dikko, the Minister of Transport of Nigeria, fled three days after the armed coup in December 1983, for his fear of life and arrived in Britain. In the summer of 1984 Umaru Dikko was seized outside his London's house, drugged and bundled into a van, taken to Stansted airport by men conspired to kidnap him, in a large wooden crate and to repatriate him to Lagos, Nigeria. The kidnapping was, however, foiled by British customs officers. The Nigerian government wanted Umaru Dikko because he had been chairman of Shagari's presidential task force on rice. The junta said he had forced up the price, but Dikko denied this. In London Umaru Dikko went on to study law, being called to the Bar at the Middle Temple in 1991. Later on Alhaji Umaru Dikko was invited back to Nigeria. There he set up a new political party. He was chairman of the disciplinary committee of the People's Democratic Party of Nigeria. Born in Wamba Umaru Dikko was educated in Zaria in Kaduna state. He took a Bachelor of Science degree at London University. He worked for some time with the BBC's Hausa language service. Alhaji Umaru Dikko passed away in London.
