Abida Parveen

Birth:1954

Death:

Sufi singer Pakistani Abida Parveen is the greatest female Sufi singer and an Asian soul. Her hallucinating and deep performance regularly sends her audiences in Pakistan and India into swaying raptures, swooning and fainting being quite standard reactions. Her first US tour was in 1993 and Abida Parveen has since travelled across the world to perform at sold-out venues. Her own concerts singing qawwalis, ghazals and kafis - all variations of Pakistani folks and classical - are applauded with yelps and dancing. Born in Larkana, the Sindhi city of Pakistan Abida Parveen hails from a long line of Sufi mystics and singers. From the age of three she spent hours with her father at the dargah (Sufi shrines, often built over graves of saints), singing and reciting at festivals. It was normal the culture in which she grew up.
