Michael Bukht

Birth:1941

Death:2011

TV chef British TV chef known to Food and Drink viewers as Michael Barry, his pseudonym, was born Mirza Michael John Bukht. While television made Michael Bukht a household name from Food and Drink, his role in broadcasting came as one of the founders of the national commercial radio station Classic FM in 1992, and its programme controller for five years. He had keen sense to deliver entertainment. The perfect pitch for an audience was again demonstrated when Michael Bukht took over as managing director of Invicta Radio in Kent in 1985, when he moved to Canterbury and stayed for the rest of his life. When commercial stations had come to London in 1973, Michael Bukht was programme director of Capital Radio. He had honed there to the more sober presentation of classical music. Continuing his work on the programme, 'Crafty Cook', until its last series in 2001, Michael Bukht also wrote 29 recipes and food books, beginning with 'The Crafty Cook' in 1977. He was honoured, in 1996, when he was appointed OBE. Born, in London, to a Pakistani diplomat father and Welsh mother Michael Bukht studied history at King's College, London. He started his career in BBC, in 1963, as a trainee.
