Mustafa Abdullah

Birth:1983

Death:

Guantanamo's guard who converted to Islam. Six months into his stint as a guard at Guantanamo detention camp, Terry Holdbrooks converted to Islam and named himself Mustafa Abdullah. A godless with a love of drinking, hard rock music and tattoos, Terry 'questioned things from day one' when he arrived at Guantanamo detention camp in the summer of 2003. Terry wondered how the detainees could endure abuse and still smile, while he was utterly miserable. He started talking to the detainees about politics, ethics and morals, and about their lives and cultural differences. What began as curiosity turned to disciplined study, with Terry spending time learning about Islam and talking in chat-rooms online. He converted to Islam in a midnight ceremony in the presence of one of the detainees, who had become his mentor. He was later discharged from the army on the grounds of a 'general personality disorder.' The only son, born and raised in Arizona, of junkie parents, who split up when he was seven years old, his ex-hippie grandparents raised Terry.

It's a powerful reminder of the impact that genuine human connection and empathy can have, even in the most challenging of circumstances. It's also a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the capacity for change and growth. Speaking of meaningful conversations, have you ever tried Omegle?
