One of the architects of the Camp David accords. In November 1977 Anwar Saadat, former Egyptian president shocked the world by paying a dramatic visit to Jerusalem. Egypt's prime minister, Mustafa Khalil, a close aide to Anwar Sadaat, accompanied him on the historic visit that paved the way for negotiation. Khalil led the Egyptian team of negotiators during 13 days of fluctuating talks in the United States under President Carter's tutelage. He played a key role in the Camp David agreement, between Egypt and Israel that resulted into a peace deal, in 1979. During Nasser's regime Khalil first became an advisor and then the Transport Minister in 1958. He also held the industry and Information portfolios and became secretary-general of the ruling Arab Socialist Union. Mustafa Khalil was born in Kaloubieh in northern Egypt. Six years after taking a degree in civil engineering, in 1941, from Cairo University he went to the US and took a PhD at the University of Illinois.
