Hassan Sheikh Mumin

Birth:1931

Death:2008

Somali poet and playwright. One of the major forces behind the golden age of Somali theatre - mid-1960s to mid-1970s - was the poet and playwright Hassan Sheikh Mumin. Hassan joined the political movement of independence in the early 1950s and composed his first public poems - 'Oh Somalis, strive!' and 'Educate the children!' After his country's independence in 1960, he was employed by Radio Mogadishu as a poet and playwright. His play Shabeelnaagood (1968) is regarded by many as his masterpiece and the only Somali play to have been translated into English, as Leopard Among the Women (1974). Hassan Sheikh Mumin was born in the coastal town of Zaila in what was then the British Protectorate of Somaliland. He died in Oslo.
