Pakistan's popular Urdu poet A committed leftist Khalid in 1960s worked for number Pakistan's newspapers. In 1973 he joined 'Masawaat' in Karachi. His only collection of poetry, titled 'Ghazaal-e-Dasht-e-Sagan' was published at the turn of the century. Immensely popular at home his poetry also struck a cord abroad. His poem 'Aljazair' (Algiers) became so popular during Algerian independence movement against French colonialism that it was translated into Arabic and the Time magazine published its English version. Like other progressive poets Khalid, while in India, composed soulful poems during the famous famine of Bengal. In Lucknow, he became a correspondent for the daily 'Tanveer' brought out by Chaudhry Khaleeq-uz-Zaman. He also remained associated with 'Hamdam', one of the most prominent newspapers of the time. Poet and journalist, Khalid also known as Khalid Bhai migrated to Pakistan in 1947. He was a civil engineer by profession. Khalid was born in Qaimganj, Farrukhabad, UP India. He passed away in Karachi.
