Pakistan's renowned man of letters. The unforgettable film songs like 'Us Bewafa Ka Shehar Hey' composed by Munir Niazi catapulted him to fame in Pakistan. Niazi became associated with what was then Pakistan's budding film industry and penned a number of lyrical poems for films. The late Nasim Begum who sang Niazi's composition 'Us Bewafa Ka Shehar Hey' for the 1962 film 'Shaheed' was a great hit song. Niazi published 'Saat Rung' a weekly in 1949. He also wrote articles for newspapers, magazines and radio. In 1960, he established Al-Misal a publishing house. Among his famous anthologies of Urdu poems he also authored in the Punjabi language. A master of poetic imagery Niazi created a distinct style, rhythm and diction where mythology, nostalgia, haunting romance and a belief in the supernatural are some of those themes that found frequent mention in his poems. His works have been translated in English, Russian, German, Norwegian and Hindi. Munir Niazi who was born Munir Ahmad in Khanpur (India) passed away after suffering with cardiac arrest in Karachi.
