Egypt's envoy involved in the Peace Pact with Israel. Ashraf was a member of the Egyptian negotiating team that worked out the first Arab peace deal with Israel and a long time ambassador to the United States. In 1978, President Carter brought President Anwar el-Saadat and Prime Minister Menachem Begin of Israel to the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland to talk peace. The Camp David documents led to a peace treaty in 1979, the first between an Arab country and Israel. Ashraf had been Egypt's media advisor through the Middle East war in October 1973. Ashraf Ghorbal was born in Alexandria, educated at Cairo and Harvard Universities and began his diplomatic career in 1949 with the Egyptian delegation to the United Nation.
