Noted Urdu poet and man of letters. In his two anthologies of poems, Taar-e-Pairahan (1957) and Harf-e-Dilras (1979) Haqee established his refined taste in poetry. Dil Ki Zubaan is a selection of his hundred of ghazals. He also wrote musicals for Radio Pakistan in the early 1950s. In addition to his association with Pakistan Television, Haqee remained associated with the Urdu Lughat Board of Pakistan from 1958 to 1975 doing spadework for what would be a monumental 24-volume dictionary. A couple of years before his death he completed the translation of the eighth edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary. Haqee's gripping memoirs were serialised by the prestigious literary magazine, Afkaar, in 41 parts in the 1980s and 90s. His Nuta-e-Raaz and Naqd-o-Nigarish are considered specimen of landmark research. Shanul Haq Haqee, who was born in Delhi, died of lung cancer in Canada where he was buried.
