One of the greatest Iranian painters of the Saffavid dynasty. Sultan Muhammad was the leading exponent of the Turkman School of painting and was influenced, after 1522, by the greatest of all Iranian painters, Behzad of Herat. His patron was Shah Tahmasp I, son of Ismail Shah. From 1520 to 1538 he worked on Shahnama, along with other court artists. He illustrated a Divan of Hafiz and a Divan of Turkish poet Ali Sher Navai in 1527 and the Khamsa of Nizami for Shah Tahmasp. His son Mir Ali also proved to be one of the leading painters.
