The son of Prince Jahan Shah, one of the brothers who were killed in disputing the crown with their eldest brother Jahandar Shah, the son of Bahadur Shah. Muhammad Shah, also known as Muhammad Shah Rangila, was crowned by the Sayyad brothers in 1719. He reigned for about thirty years. He died one month after the battle of Sarhind, which his son Ahmad Shah fought against Ahmad Shah Abdali. It was during his reign that Nadir Shah Durrani had attached India in 1739 and Muhammad Shah had to give him the peacock throne and the diamond Kohinoor to appease him. In 1723 he made Urdu the court language of India.
