Politician, Muslim nationalist. Mukhtar went on a scholarship to Britain for higher studies paid by the Nizam of the princely state of Hyderabad. While in England he was the first Indian to be appointed as a resident medical officer at the Charing Cross Hospital in London. On having obtained doctor of Medicine and master of Surgery from Edinburgh University, he returned to India, in 1910. Dr Ansari finally settled down in his house, Darussalaam, in Delhi and the house turned into a hub of political activities. He acquired his fame as a doctor as well as politician. In 1912, during the ongoing Balkan War, there was a strong reaction in India against the Western onslaught on the Ottoman Empire by a group of Balkan countries. He took a medical team to Turkey during the Khilafat Movement and the Balkan Wars (1912-13) and was honoured for bringing India's relation closer to Turkey. His multi-faceted personality as an able leader, diplomat and manager - travelling throughout Turkey to meet bureaucrats and politicians, chalking out plans to make the work of the Mission effective, managing the finances of the Mission, keeping abreast of the political developments, and in all this, finding time to write about everything was extra-ordinary. One time President of Muslim League Nagpur Session, in 1920, he later quit the party and joined All India Congress and was elected the President of Madras Congress Session in 1927. He was an ardent supporter of Hindu-Muslim unity. Dr Ansari was one of the founding members of Jamia Milia and remained its chancellor during 1928 to 1936. Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari was born in Yousufpur, in Ghazipur district of UP. He passed away while travelling back, by train, from Maussori to Delhi.
