The T shirt Turk. In 1982, Kemal opened the doors to his new gift shop, after having earned a tough engineering degree on full scholarship, on a busy commercial street in Aachen, Germany. The only way he could stay in Germany was to go into his own business. He, therefore, started his business with $2,000 he saved from summer jobs in a metal factory, and worked 18-hour days selling T shirts at rock-bottom prices. Now Kemal's tiny shop has become into largest Turkish-run business outside Turkey, of international reach and revenue to the tune of $975m and employing 1,700 in Germany and 11,500 worldwide, in 2001, according to the Association of Turkish Businessmen & Industrialist in Europe. With his headquarters in Wurselen, outside Aachen, he has 350 retail outlets in Germany. His subsidiaries, manufacturing and selling clothing both wholesale and retail, is spread over 12 countries including the U.S. According to the Centre for Turkish Studies at Essen University, there are 59,500 Turkish-owned, usually small, businesses in Germany. These businesses generates $15 billion in annual sales, according to estimates by the accounting firm KPMG and expected to more than quadruple by 2010, producing $66 billion. Kemal Sahin, the Turk who clothed Germany, is a prodigy from a farm family in an isolated mountain town in Turkey. Like 80 per cent of his fellow Turks, he hasn't taken German citizenship.
