Political leader. He was made leader of the anti-government party, Armed Islamic Group (GIA), in 2001. GIA was originally formed after the Algerian military cancelled 1992 legislative elections to prevent an Islamic party from winning. He died in a military sting operation in Tamezguida Forest, Algeria.
