First India's Muslim president. As vice chancellor of Jamia Millia (1926) Dr Zakir Hussain loved and toiled for it and without him Jamia might have perhaps perished. He defined Jamia's main aim as an institution that aspired for Islam's dynamic and creative force. He supplied brilliant and effective ideas - a new course, a new technique for raising funds, a new exhibition or booklet to popularise Jamia's work. Dr zakir Hussain later on became vice chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (1948), governor of Bihar (1957), vice president of India (1962) and finally India's first Muslim president from 1967 to 1969. Dr Zakir Hussain was recipient of India's national awards Padma Bhusan and Bharat Ratna (1963). Zakir Hussain was born in Hyderabad. While in Berlin for three years he obtained a Ph.D. for a dissertation on Britain's agrarian policy in India; some of his work for this was done in London. He translated Plato's Republic and Canon's Elementary Political Economy into Urdu. Dr Zakir Hussain was buried within Jamia's campus, the institution he adored.
