Last Ottoman Sultan. Sultan Muhammad VI whose real name was Muhammad Wahiuddin was the younger brother of Sultan Adbul Hamid who was deposed by the Young Turks in 1909. When he took the throne in 1918 after the death of Mohammd V, he undertook to crush the nationalists at the behest of Allies in December 1921. The nationalists had formed a parallel government in Anatolia under the leadership of Ataturk. In 1919 elections the nationalists had won a majority, but the Sultan dissolved the parliament in 1920 and the same year signed the treaty of Serves, which reduced the Porte Sublime to a small state. After the nationalists defeated the Greeks they took full control of Turkey and in 1922 abolished the Sultanate. Muhammad VI fled to Malta. The Caliphate was abolished in 1924.
