Sultan Abdul Majid II

Death:1944

The last `elected' Caliph of Turkey. When Mehmud VI took the throne in 1918, he was declared the crown prince. After the young Turks abolished the Sultanate in 1922, the opponents of Mustafa Kamal rallied around him and the Grand National Assembly elected him Caliph on 18 November 1922. Mustafa Kamal proclaimed the Turkish Republic in October 1923 and on 3 March 1924 he abolished the Caliphate. Next day Abdul Majid was exiled.
