Nawaz Sharif

Birth:1949

Death:

Politician. Emerged on Pakistan's political scene during 1980s, Nawaz Sharif's first term as prime minister (1990-93) was halted when he was accused of corruption by the country's president. He got into fights with anyone who stood in his way, including the President Ghulam Ishaq Khan, who tried to fire Nawaz Sharif before conspiring with the army to force fresh elections. Nawaz Sharif was re-elected in landslide victory in 1997 and remained prime minister until 1999. He took care to dispense with opponents, including army chief General Jehangir Karamat, whom he replaced with a handpicked general Pervez Musharaffaf. General Pervez Musharraf ousted him in a coup in 1999. In 2000, Nawaz Sharif was convicted of corruption and was also found guilty of hijacking and terrorism. His sentence was commuted in return for exile in Saudi Arabia. After his return to Pakistan from Saudi Arabia, in 2007, Nawaz Sharif began his political comeback as his Pakistan Muslim League won control of Punjab province. He won, in 2013, an unprecedented third term as prime minister after defeating the incumbent Pakistan People's party. A fan of the free market, he hopes to overhaul subsidy-devouring state industries, and favours the privatisation of the railways and national airline. He is also determined to restart efforts made under his last government to improve relations with India. Nawaz Sharif was born in Lahore into industrial family.
