King of Delhi. Shah Alam who who was the son of Alamgir II was enthroned in 1759. After the defeat of Shuja-uddaula, his prime Minster, at Buxar in 1764, he was forced by the British to grant them the diwani of Bengal in 1765, on the promise of paying 240,000 Rupees annually to him by the East India Company, from the revenues of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. Shah Alam continued to live at Allahabad under the protection of the British till the year 1771, but returned to Delhi on 25th December the same year. In 1788 Ghulam Qadir Khan Rohilla attacked Delhi, arrested Shah Alam and put out his eyes. Shah Alam was also a poet and had a Divan in Urdu and Persian.
