Alhaj Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari

Death:

A Nigerian political leader. Shagari a poet, teacher and founder of Northern People's Congress (1951), held several cabinet positions including that of finance commissioner (1971-75). Shagari founded National Party of Nigeria in 1978 and led his party to victory in 1979 elections. He became the first civilian president of Nigeria after 13 years of military rule. Shagari was overthrown by the military in 1983.
