Salamat Ali Khan

Death:2001

Distinguished Pakistani singer whose voice united the Indian subcontinent and earned the highest accolades from India's music pundits. Salamat was an outstanding exponent of khayal, the imaginative and colourful style of music evolved under the influence of Sufi saints. He hailed from the professional musician family of Sham Chaurasi gharana in Hoshlarpur, Punjab, India, but moved to Lahore after the partition of India. In 1960, Salamat won the President of Pakistan's Award. He who won international recognition died of kidney failure.
