Said Pasha

Birth:1822

Death:1863

Ottoman Viceroy of Egypt during 1854-63. Sa'id was the son of the famous Viceroy Muhammad Ali Pasha, who was educated in Paris and was influenced by Western thoughts. He made some law reforms in 1855. He tried innovations in other areas too. Sa'id's his most notable act was to grant a concession to a French company in 1856 to construct the Suez Canal. But by 1859 both Sa'id and the Ottoman Sultan opposed the plan, however, the work continued because of the influence of Western powers.
