Mustafa Rashid Pasha

Ottoman grand Vizier for six times. Rashid Pasha was ambassador to France in 1834 and during his stay there studied French. He supported the westernising reforms of Sultan Mahmud II and his son. Between 1839 and 1858 he was the grand Vizier for six times and twice minister of foreign affairs. Rashid's reforms or Tanzimat, which was proclaimed in 1839, included abolition of slavery, introduction of new civil and criminal codes and the reforms to end nepotism. He was pro-west in his policies.
