Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

Birth:1948

Death:1997

The Shahen-shah-e-qawwali from Pakistan. Qawwali, a version of devotional music, was established in the Indian sub-continent at the end of 13th century. Nusrat came from a line of Qawwals stretching back over 600 years. Nusrat's implacable power of the voice could rend the soul even as they soothe it. Nusrat was awarded many honorary degrees and a UNESCO prize in 1995. The chubby performer will best be remembered for giving fresh life to the qawwali, the music of an ancient Islamic movement called Sufism, by fusing it with Western rhythms and tunes and bringing his music to a world-wide audience. In the 1990s, his audience broadened to include Western artists. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's best-produced albums comprise Shahen-Shah (1989), Shahbaaz (1991), Mustt Mustt (1990) and Night Song (1996). Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born in Faisalbad, and received his informal lessons from his father, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan. He was revered in Pakistan and India.
