An Iraqi leader and prime minister for fourteen times. In 1909 when Iraq was a province of the Ottoman Empire, Nuri was commissioned in the Turkish Army and participated in the First World War against the British. When British captured Nuri in 1916 he then joined the army led by Faisal 1, whom the British were supporting in a revolt against the Turks. When Faisal became the King in 1920 Nuri was appointed as prime minister in 1930. When World War II broke out he wanted to support the British, but after a coup by young army officers, he had to go into exile. Nuri was again made prime minister when the British occupied Iraq and he served from 1941 to 1944. When Nuri wanted an Arab union with Jordan in 1958, which was close with the West, Iraqi army under the leadership of Abdul Karim Qasim overthrew the government and assassinated Nuri as Said.
