Muhammad XI Abu Abdullah

Birth:1460

Death:1527

The last Sultan of Granada. Abu Abdullah the king was called Boabdil by the Spanish. He rebelled against his father Abu Al Hasan and seized Alhambra in 1482 and ruled until 1492. The Roman Catholic rulers of Aragon and Castile, Ferdinand and Isabella, jointly attacked Granada in 1491 and forced him to surrender on 2 January 1492, thus it was the beginning of an end to the Muslim rule in Spain. The last Moorish king in Spain, Boabdil, was said to have wept as he looked back at the hilltop castle, gardens and palaces of the Alhambra in Granada. Legend has it that his mother chastised him, saying: 'You cry like a woman for what you have not known how to defend like a man.' The Sultan of Granada went to Morocco in 1493 in exile. His life story survived in folktales collected by Washington Irving in The Alhambra 1832.
