Muawiya Ibn Abu Sufyan

The founder of the Umayyed dynasty. He did not accept Islam till the conquest of Makkah in 630. He was the governor of Syria during Hazrat Umar's Khilafat in which capacity he served for 20 years. He made a strong base there and launched raids into Byzantine, Asia Minor and sent naval expeditions against Cyprus, Rhodes and Sicily.
