Author, poet, journalist, and freedom fighter. A prolific writer and a tireless political activist, Maulana Zafar Ali Khan is best remembered for Zamindar, the Urdu weekly which his father founded but into which he infused new life when he took over its editing. He turned the weekly, which later became a daily, into a mouthpiece for political philosophy, which combined intense anti-colonial fervour. The British sent him to jail for his political activity and banned his paper, but that did not deter Maulana Zafar. Maulana's role in politics was second only to that of Ali brothers and Abul Kalam Azad during the Khilafat movement. Educated at the Aligarh and Allahabad universities, Maulana Zafar's passion for literary expression took him to the Nizam state, where the intellectual atmosphere helped Maulana come into his own. His books include the translation of Maulana Shibli Numani's monumental Al Farroq into English, besides the translation into Urdu of some classical works by British and American novelists. The Maulana Zafar Ali Khan Trust has been doing a commendable job of printing his unpublished works, as well as republishing old ones.
