Malaysia's first queen.
Kurshiah was crowned after the nation became independent in 1957. Her prodigious charity work and her struggle to improve women's lives through 'Malaysian Islamic Women's Welfare Board which she established in 1961, to promote equal rights for women, made her more than a royal figurehead.
