Koprulu Muhammad Pasha

Birth:1574

Death:1661

Ottoman grand vizier during 1656-61. Muhammad Pasha defeated the Venetian Fleet in 1657 and established the supremacy of the Ottoman navy. After serving as Governor in different provinces, he had returned to Kopru, his father-in-law's seat, a small town in Anatolia. Hence his nickname was Koprulu. Muhammad Pasha was brought from retirement, when a clique as the most experienced man recommended him to the Sultan's mother. He had re-established central authority in Syria, Egypt and Anadolu. He annexed some territories of Austria and suppressed the janisary Corps, which had become very powerful and responsible for many palace coups. He executed the rebel Pashas in 1659, reorganised the army and established central authority.
